President/CEO, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Northern Nevada
Reno took and did a collaborative effort. We have an interesting dichotomy
in our city that even though 1 of every 4 people is Hispanic and we have
a huge Hispanic workforce, we have an emerging market that is Hispanic
businesses and then we have a small sector that is Hispanic business professionals.
What we don't have are any Hispanic either politicians or corporate people
who are making decisions at higher levels. So Hispanic Chamber has taken
on the role of developing leadership and moving leadership into those
power positions. Part of what we've done is work with the city of Reno,
worked with the SBA, worked with Nevada small business development center.
Other organizations like HUD who want access to the Hispanics, and the
Hispanic market, and the Hispanic professional, the Hispanic workforce
as an economic market as a consumer--in developing our resource center
that is a bilingual business development center, that not only enhances
Hispanic business, but we can enhance business in any language. We can
make sure that the Hispanic businesses as they progress through the generations
and through the language can increase their business.
